The Battle of Stamford Bridge

September 25, 1066
Hearing the news of the Danish invasion to the north, King Harold Godwinson marched his army 190 miles from London in just 4 days, collecting additional troops along the way.  The march was so quick, that the Danes had no idea he was even in the vicinity.  What followed was a brutal battle of shield walls at Stamford Bridge.  This battle is traditionally viewed as the end of the Viking Age.

However, although victorious, King Harold now learned of a Norman invasion in the south. He marched back south and faced William “The Conqueror” at Hastings to decide who would control all of England.
